Former chairman of the  Republican National Committee  Michael Steele who has also served as RNC chair until 2011,announced on Monday that he has joined the Lincoln Project as a senior advisor, a group of constitutional conservatives who is working to prevent President Donald Trump’s re-election and has run ads supporting former Vice President Joe Biden and Democratic Senate candidates.

“Today is the day where things should matter and you need to take stock of what matters to you — and the kind of leader you want to lead in these moments. And for me, it ain’t him,” Steele, a political analyst for MSNBC said making the announcement to host Nicole Wallace on Monday afternoon.

Steel has served as lieutenant governor from 2003 to 2007 and he was the first African American to be elected to statewide office in Maryland. He was also the first African American to serve as chairman of the RNC.

“I get my role as a former national chairman. I get it, but I’m an American. I get my role as a former party leader. I’m still an American,” Steele told Wallace, adding, “And these things matter to me more than aligning myself with a party that has clearly decided it would rather be sycophantic than principled.”

Steele made this announcement on the first day of the Republican National Convention and on the tails of a media attack by the “never Trump” group, which has produced some of the most scorching political critiques against Donald Trump re-election.

“Dr. King said our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter,” Steele told MSNBC on Monday.

“And we’re at a point where it matters how a president leads. It matters what a president says to young men and women who are coming into government service, as they look at how he treats government servants.”

“It matters how he handles a crisis, it matters how he leads the people through that crisis. All these things matter.”

News of Steele’s entry to the group comes one day after George Conway who was the founding member of the group, announced his departure.

The husband and wife both said Sunday they were stepping down from their respective roles to focus on their family but the reality was that George Conway who is married to White House Senior Advisor Kellyanne Conway, became a victim of president Donald Trump for attacking an administration that president’s wife was part of

Steele in various interviews comments Donald Trump as racist and continues to criticize the Trump administration on various media platforms.

In a statement, Steele wrote that Trump has “devolve[d] into preying upon fears and resentments with narcissism that nurtures only chaos and confusion.”

“Leadership is needed now more than ever and I am proudly committed to resetting the course of our nation, standing once again for the future of my Party; and working with The Lincoln Project to help restore the purpose for sitting in that chair,” Steele wrote

Connie Morella and Wayne Gilchrest, Maryland Republicans who served multiple terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, endorsed Democratic candidate for president Joe Biden.

While the previous legislators have spoken out against the party,Kim Klacik, another black Republican  has been upraised by party leadership.

The Lincoln Project from its start in December has given rise to some of the jarring critiques against the Trump administration, especially how the President Donald Trump has handled the coronavirus pandemic’s situation. The critiques are being run online as well as on television.

The critiques are ranging from slamming Donald Trump’s response to the coronavirus pandemic to attacking Republican senators who have stood with the President. These critiques have drawn an angry berate from Trump, who has labeled the group “Losers Project” and called its founders Republicans in name only.
